The tool steel is beautifully and fully polished and no further honing is needed to get going. My test of whether a chisel is ready to go is that it should be able to shave hairs off your arm. These did. The leather case is also quite nice although it seems like it would be cramped for 12 chisels. I'm looking forward to putting these to good use on some dove tails and will probably add a few larger sized chisels.June 2009 update - I subsequently bought a set of Two Cherry skew chisels and a 1.25 inch bench chisel. These, while similar in overall quality to the original set, were not as finely honed as the original set.
